Different Philodendron Varieties That You Can Buy Online

Philodendron varieties range from climbers to flowering plants and even those that look like miniature indoor trees. There are more than 480 different varieties of the Philodendron.

This plant was first found in South American rainforests and has since made its way cozily into our homes. So let me introduce you to 13 philodendron types that we love, whether because of its easy plant care or notorious heart shaped leaf. I’m sure you’ll find the perfect philodendron plant for you!

1. Philodendron cordatum, the heartleaf philodendron

Origin: The Caribbean and South America

types of philodendrons

The emerald green heartleaf Philodendron cordatum also referred to as Heart Leaf Philodendron, is one of the most popular types of Philodendrons in this plant family. This is a really easy plant to take care of and you won’t need to have a specialized gardening method or green thumb.

You can give this plant with sturdy stems as a gift to any beginner gardeners since they’ll only need to water it every once in a while (bottom watering is a good idea for this philodendron) and merely leave it to grow in their flowerpot. The best part about this member of the Philodendron family is its leaf shape and color. The heart-shaped leaves are shiny and bright, glossy green.

The Philodendron Bipinnafidum is a large leaf Philodendron plant that cannot climb upwards using its trailing vines or central stem. It does not have the upright growth pattern of other Philodendrons with olive green leaves and vines. Essentially, it is a large floor plant that will give your home a great pop of color due to its green and glossy leaves.

This tropical plant is excellent for temperate climates. Its large leaves come with deep lobes. The dark green leaves love to face the direct sunlight, so you’ll need to regularly rotate the plant to make sure every portion of it receives some sunlight.

3. Philodendron erubescens, blushing philodendron

Origin: Costa Rica, South American rainforests

types of philodendrons

The Philodendron Erubescens plant is rather exotic and usually found in tropical rainforests. The unique and gorgeous plant can climb via its vines for as much as five feet upwards.

This is a variegated Philodendron that can be black in color or dark green with some pink streaks. You’ll need to expose the plant to bright indirect light. When grown in nature outdoors, the plant’s leaves sometimes have red highlights.

4. Philodendron xanadu, winterbourne

Origin: Brazil

types of philodendrons

Based in its natural habitat in the country of Brazil, the Philodendron Xanadu is also known as P. Winterbourne and is a relatively large plant you can grow indoors. Despite its size, it can be held in your home without overtaking an entire room.

This hardy plant doesn’t grow as tall as some other members of this plant family, but it can grow much wider than some other types of Philodendron plants. It also has large, dissected, deeply lobed leaves and can stand upright.

5. Philodendron gloriosum, velvet leaf philodendron

Origin: Colombia, southern Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Central America

types of philodendrons

The Philodendron gloriosum plant has incredibly large, dark-green leaves. The leaves also have white or cream-colored veins spreading throughout. Don’t be disappointed if yours doesn’t look quite as glorious as the picture, though. This large size is more commonly found in the wild and it may be harder to grow such an impressive plant indoors.

The plant’s leaves also have a velvet texture. The velvet leaf Philodendron can be grown in a hanging basket in both bright light and shade. It also needs daily watering and the right humidity.

6. Philodendron hastatum, silver sword

Origin: Brazil

types of philodendrons

The Philodendron Hastatum plant is also known as P. Silver sword due to its silver-colored leaves. The long leaves change colors over time. First, the leaves are generally blue or gray-colored. Once the plant matures, the leaves turn a grayish-green color.

I’ve found that as mine got older, the heart shape became more pronounced, almost to the point of making a V shape.

This particular plant grows upward, which means it is useful to pinch it back sometimes. We put ours on a diy self-watering moss pole and stood it in the corner. So if you’re looking for a nice house plant that can grow up your walls and give your room a beautiful look, consider the Philodendron hastatum.

The Scindapsus Pictus plant is also known as the silver vine or silver Pothos, yet it is not a pothos plant. The leaves and vines of the Scindapsus pictus plant are very similar to the typical Philodendron plant.

The leaves are dark olive green and have silver blotches. This particular trailing plant can grow upwards of six feet in height, as long as your place has enough room 🙂

You can take care of this plant in hanging baskets much like you would any other Philodendron plant and it will trail down beautifully.

The Philodendron Rugosum plant is also called pigskin, which may be due to the rough texture of its leaves. This Ecuador-based plant is rather rare and unique. The heart shaped leaves are very thick and tend to make the plant stand out.

There are different patterns on various P. Rugosum plant leaves and the rough, velvety texture of each plant leaf is patterned. You may accidentally think this is a plastic plant since it has rather leathery leaves that come in a bright-green color.

10. Philodendron moonlight

Origin: South America

types of philodendrons

The Philodendron Moonlight plant has rather large leaves, which come in a rather bright-green color. This green flora looks stunning both indoors and outdoors, so you can either plant it in your backyard garden or keep the moonlight Philodendron as a house plant.

Origin: Tropical climates, South America

types of philodendrons

This is a hybrid plant with plenty of colors to show off in your home. The Philodendron Prince of Orange is easy to maintain and care for, so you can gift it to an amateur gardener.

For most plants, yellowing leaves are a bad sign – but this isn’t the case for the Prince of Orange Philodendron! This colorful philodendron variety produces gorgeous, elongated, oval-shaped leaves in orange, yellow, and green. The shiny leaves start out orange-colored and then mature to a copper color, sunny yellow leaves, and then to bright green flora.

How to care for most types of philodendron plants

If you have chosen a philodendron plant for your home, you will need to grow it in bright but indirect light. The soil needs to be moist but not overwatered. Since this sweetheart plant comes from a tropical climate, it needs a higher amount of humidity.

Low humidity is still okay for a heartleaf Philodendron, but if you want greater fluorescent green foliage and growth, then high humidity is a must. You’ll also need a temperature between 65 °F and 80 °F. You should also add a liquid fertilizer once or twice a month during the summer and spring seasons.

That’s all there is to it! Now you can go out and purchase one of these beautiful indoor plants to enjoy for years to come.
